RESIDUAL HAUNTING
For
us oldies out there... we remember VHS tapes, right? Remember going
to BlockBuster video, renting a VHS movie that had a "Be kind,
rewind" sticker? That is kind of what a residual haunt is like.
It's a moment in time repeating itself over and over like rewinding,
playing, then rewinding a VHS tape.
How do residuals occur? The main theory about what causes a residual haunting has little to do with death and more with psychic energy. It is believed an event that causes a great amount of emotion: whether joy, sorrow, anger, something life changing or traumatizing, leaves a psychic imprint of that event at the moment it happens, and leaves it there to replay repeatedly in time.
If there is a haunting in a home, whoever lives or visits there may encounter that residual energy at some point. Some cases involve a trigger of some sort for the residual haunting to begin. Examples of triggers: the emotional state of the person who first experiences the haunting. Your own emotions can trigger residuals to begin. Weather conditions have been said to raise or lower the frequency of a residual haunting. It is also believed that the natural resources of the area that are said to act as a conduits for hauntings. High amounts of limestone or iron in an area can make this type of phenomenon more likely.
When it comes to residuals... once activity has been triggered, nothing you do or say can interfere with the course of the event. Sometimes you may only hear noises. There have been cases of people hearing doors that don't exist closing, and finding out later that their house had been remodeled by previous owners, and there use to be a door where they hear it opening and closing, even though it no longer exists. Some see ghosts walking up stair cases that aren't there anymore. Some notice these hauntings at the same time every day... some notice these hauntings at the same time, only during storms, or other trigger events. (it could be a dog barking, a certain name being mentioned, when someone in the house is upset or really happy, someone knocking on the door, etc.)
A residual haunting is not intelligent, meaning, you can not communicate with it or stop the chain of events once they've been triggered. For example: If you see a residual manifestation walking down the hall, speaking to it or trying to get in it's way will not stop it from continuing down the path it has always walked. If you hear a phone ringing, answering your phone will not stop the ringing until the residual event has been completed. There is nothing you can do to interact, stop or deter an event from completing it's set path once that event has started. These types of hauntings can NOT hurt you... unless you are startled when it first occurs and trip and fall, or walk into something while distracted. That's about it. They don't interact with you and you can't interact with them.
Whatever the event, whatever the trigger that causes the event to happen... there is nothing you can do about a residual haunt, because it's not really a haunting... it's just energy replaying in time. In fact, the cause of the haunting may not even be deceased. There is a case of a family seeing a teenage boy doing the same thing over and over every time it snowed... after investigating further, they not only found out who the boy was... they found the boy was still alive and living in an assisted living facility with his wife. It was his energy that lingered in that area... not him.
So a residual haunting really has nothing to do with ghosts. It is all about the energy. Who knows... somewhere there may be a younger version of you freaking the heck out of an unsuspecting family right now.
