Insidious 3 Review

B+/A-

Insidious 3 was pretty good. (Spoilers)

It kind of brings everyone full circle. It explains that Elise (the psychic) predicted the events of her death in the first movie... she knew how she would die and by whom. It also showed how she came to know Specs and Tucker. There's even a cameo by Darth Maul (who is the main demon in Insidious 1 - you'll get the Darth Maul joke if you see the first Insidious.) lol

The movie was okay. if I had to rate the three films... I'd say:

1st - First movie
2nd - Third installment
3rd - Second chapter

They were all good in their own ways, but I feel 1 and 3 have a level of believability to it, where as the 2nd chapter kind of had a typical Hollywood feel. Though still done well, I wish it had the same flare the first movie had.

This 3rd installment was pretty good though, but it wasn't perfect.

It seemed a little rushed. Instead of giving you a taste of who the characters were... it just jumped right into the haunting. You never got a chance to really care about the characters. Elise, Specs and Tucker, sure - because they were from the other 2 installments... but the main family - no. Like the boy who lived next door that had an obvious crush on the main girl... he basically disappears as we start getting into the action - where any other movie would have thrown him into a "This is the girl I love, I'll help her" kind of role.

So that was a bit disappointing. However, when Elise was part of the movie, and we saw her back history, and got a glimpse into her future, and why she does what she does... it was interesting and entertaining.

I'm hoping next installment (if there is an Insidious 4) they go all out and not rush things. Give us a chance to get to know the characters, so what if the movie is 2 hours instead of 1:37?

It is still a solid movie and I enjoyed it a lot more than "Spy" which I saw the day before. "Spy" wasn't bad... it was just a lot of good jokes mixed in some really bad, unnecessary jokes and way too much swearing. Even rappers don't swear that much on their explicit lyrics albums. lol

Poltergeist Review

Poltergeist Remake

B/B+

Remakes. They're not always a good idea.

But sometimes they're not as bad as you think either.

Poltergeist was okay as far as remakes go.

The 3D made me feel dizzy. It didn't work out that well. The parts that would have rocked in 3D were poorly handled. There was one scene where something breaks apart and is suppose to look like it's coming at you... but it instead became blurry specks.

The movie itself was pretty good... didn't have the charm of the original... but it was a decent movie.
(A few small spoilers without giving much away... If you know Poltergeist, there aren't too many surprises.)

There were a few things that were slight issues for me... for example: You'd think the family would have a much wider range of emotion, but even when the "father" had tears in his eyes
it just didn't seem right. It was like his face was saying "emotionless" but his eyes were saying "emotion". A lot of scenes were like that with various actors. Dunno.

Then there's a scene when the little girl is "taken", the next morning the mom is in her robe casually walking out to meet the guy whose going to help get Maddy back, while the little boy (who was terrified of a squirrel and a clown doll mind you) calmly played with a drone. It's like... where's the panic? the kid panicked about a nightlight, but he's playing with his drone and mom is having a cup of coffee, while Maddy has been kidnapped by the Poltergeist!!?? K.

but all in all I say it was a pretty okay movie. I'd give it a strong B. Visually it was well done... storyline it was fairly close to the original... there was no gratuitous gore or violence or sex. That's something I like about horror movies like Poltergeist or Annabelle or The Conjuring... it's a psychological thriller that scares you with real scare tactics instead of slathering it with shock value tactics, cheapening the story.

The kids were pretty good actors for their age... and I liked Jared Harris' character of Carrigan. Carrigan replaces the character of Tangina played by the late Zelda Rubinstein. His character is a charismatic paranormal reality show celebrity who cleanses houses of evil spirits. I kind of wish his character was more present in the movie. He came in half way to the end. His character and the parapsycologists were very interesting characters. The one thing I did find odd however, was that the elder sister, who is a fan of Carrigan, and the brother were more interested in Carrigan's war wounds than panicked over the loss of their sister. Yet again - it seemed like they were too calm. The girl even seemed excited when she saw Carrigan show up uttering, "No... Way..." with a smile. Um... baby sister in danger, anyone? anyone?

All in all however, a decent movie if you don't spend too much time comparing it to the original. All things considered, as far as remakes go, this was fairly acceptable.

Annabelle Review

Annabelle

A+

Annabelle is a prequel to "The Conjuring". It takes place before the Annabelle comes into the hands of famous paranormal researchers - Ed and Lorraine Warren.

As those of us in the paranormal field know... Annabelle is based on a true story of a Raggedy Ann doll that had a demonic possession. The doll was purchased at a thrift store by a nursing student's mother as a gift for her daughter's apartment... and that is where she started wreaking havoc on the nursing student and her roommates. Moving around, bleeding.. the demon even posed as a little girl in order to get the nursing student to invite "her" to stay with them... which is how the demon was able to do it's worst.

The story of Annabelle from the movie is a fictionalized account of where Annabelle came from before she got into the hands of the nursing student and her roommates.

Warning: This review contains spoilers

There is a young couple named John and Mia, who are expecting their first child. Mia collects creepy looking dolls, (well creepy to me), but one specific one has eluded her. As a gift for his expectant wife... John finds and buys the exact doll she's been looking for that completes her collection.

Their neighbors have a daughter (Annabelle Higgins) who disappeared to join a Charlie Manson type cult who worship demons. She and her boyfriend return to the house and killed her parents in a ritualistic fashion. hearing the commotion, John and Mia run to find their neighbors dead and Mia returns to call the police... and Annabelle has gotten into her house and attacks her. John and the police are able to kill Annabelle's boyfriend. Annabelle dies after slitting her own throat and using the blood to draw the symbol of the ram... which is used to summon evil. As she dies, her blood drips onto the doll, which she is seen holding.

From there we pretty much know the story. Demon attaches to the doll... the doll is thrown away but keeps coming back, it moves from room to room, is found rocking on a rocking chair... and then bad things start to happen. The demon attached to the doll causes a fire... taunts Mia by making the baby appear to disappear, even telling her the only way to stop everything is to sacrifice her soul.

Now onto the review

I actually found this movie to be pretty good. It's a psychological thriller more than a "horror" movie. There is no gore, no gratuitous sex, no excessive swearing... nothing really used for "shock" value. It moves forward solely based on the writing, acting, and plot of the movie. I personally like that. I am not interested in a bunch of hormonal teenagers' sex lives... I'm not a big fan of excessive use of gore... I find gore nauseating rather than scary... I enjoy the nervous feeling of anticipating what is going to jump out when they open the closet - only to breath a sigh of relief that nothing jumped out - only for something to happen when I was calm and not expecting it.

so it was nice to see a horror movie that relied on storytelling rather than shock value.

The story was pretty solid - While we don't know how Annabelle came to be - we only know the story after the nursing student's mother bought the doll from the thrift store - the story cultivated here is pretty plausible in realm of what could happen in the paranormal with demonic infestation... and they keep it relevant as in, they don't take too many liberties that violate the canon of the actual story.

I really enjoy this movie. I just wish Ed and Lorraine Warren, played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, were a part of the movie. I am hoping they make a sequel to the prequel which will actually take a deeper look at the actual story of the haunting of Annabelle that we know to be true, from the perspective of the nursing students and the Warrens who came in to help them.

Mackinac Island Investigation

Mission Point Resort Theater : Investigation

(note: if you see a * ... that means there is a sound file)

Here is the first in what I hope will be a series of investigations I am going to share with you.

This is a return to Mission Point Resort on Mackinac Island. The investigation that appears in my upcoming book "Ghost in the Coal Cellar" (Due out August 8th) gives explicit details of the first really awesome investigation where a lot of things happened, so be sure to check it out.

However, I had the opportunity to return to the theater this past week for a smaller investigation. Joined again by Kimberly Cenci along with 2 of her friends, my mother and my pooches... I set out to see if I could get the residents of the theater to interact with me again.

Equipment:

Sony Cybershot Camera
Canon EOS camera
2 Sony Digital Voice Recorders
Mel Meter
K-II Meter (I came with one, Kim provided a handful more)
Several containers of glitter
Laser Grid machine
A Rubber Ducky

As soon as we were settled, we turned off the lights, and turned on the laser grid which emitted thousands of little green and red dots around the theater. (The thought behind the laser grid... when a spirit manifests, it can disrupt the stream of light so you can better see what may otherwise be a mist, or a shadow.)

I laid out a piece of paper and dumped the contents of 2 containers of glitter. My hope was that the resident child, Lucy, or the resident prankster, Harvey, would play with the glitter leaving some kind of a mark.

I placed the rubber ducky on the edge of the stage and told little Lucy (who loves to get gifts) that if she knocks the ducky off the stage, she can have it. So if she wants it, she has to knock it down to let me know.

I sit on the stage, about 10 or so feet away from the LED grid generator.

I tried taking photos with my sony cybershot. the camera pooped out and would not take pictures. I tried taking photos on my Canon. I could not get the camera to take pictures. It couldn't focus on anything and wouldn't snap. In frustration, I took out my cell phone, turned it on and snapped photos with it. Normally I don't like using my cell phone as it messes with the K-IIs... but I know I have a good camera, so I knew it would work.

I then told Harvey that I would really like his picture to frame on my wall. If he were in a good mood and would let me take his photo... that would be awesome. I have a potential EVP of what sounds like a " '*Kay" in response.  (please note: to hear some of these EVPs you will need good headphones)

This is what happens...

The strange thing about this weird mist... it moved. if you look at my mother who is sitting with my pup in her lap... in pic 1 the mist is above her shoulder. In pic 2 it's below her shoulder as if it's moving down... and in pic 3 there is only a small corner in the lower left hand side.

Now, if that were a smudge or a glitch... every picture would have this weird smudge/glitch in the center of the photo. It wouldn't move... and then disappear.

I tried to recreate the same scenario...

(click to see the larger photo) I tried taking pictures in a similar angle, I tried taking a photo facing the generator, I tried taking pics standing right next to it... I could not get that smudge/mist back. I have taken over 300 pics since these photos were taken. In the thousands of photos on my camera phone this has never happened... and has never happened since in the 300 photos taken after this. Never even got it to happen again during the investigation.

I did get this photo

in 90% of cases, I'd say hair. However... a few things.

1. Since this was a camera phone... I held the phone away from me and looked on the screen instead of through the view finder, so it was never close to my hair.

2. I really don't have any hair right now. I had my head shaved after skin cancer issues because I had atypical moles that were of concern on my head. my hair is maybe about half an inch long right now. So there's really no hair to get in the way.

It is possible this is a bug flying into the shot... but usually when a bug is this close to the camera... you can see the form of the bug... or at least wings. So while I can rule out hair... I can't rule out bug. But it is interesting.

That was it for photographic evidence.

Personal experiences:

1. While I was on the stage... my mom informed me that Yoshi was very intensely staring at nothing. Normally she'd just lay down and nap... but she was intensely stalking something with her eyes. Occasionally she'd bow her head like she does when someone pets her. after 10 minutes she finally broke her stare and laid down.

2. My other dog Dojo was sleeping on the seat next to where my mom was sitting. Out of no where he jumped from a sleeping position to a standing position, turned around, stood up on his hind legs looking at the empty seat behind him, wagging his tail frantically as he does when someone pays him attention. After a minute or two he sat down, and then laid back down.

3. While asking a few questions... we got major K-II hits. Generally they were in relation to Kimberly, someone Harvey and Lucy are very familiar with... and it was usually in relation to humiliating things like the Chicken dance, singing goofy songs, or performing other tricks. It seemed to get an excited reaction from the K-II.

4. At the end of the night... while the glitter on the paper seemed to have not moved, there was a small amount of glitter on the floor.

5. I went to take the rubber ducky that hadn't moved all night when suddenly I noticed... it was gone! I looked down at the floor, and there it was - sitting up right, facing in the same direction as it had been facing on the stage, right at the foot of the stage. I tried several times to put the ducky in the same place it was on the stage, and then I knocked it down. Each time it would fall, bounce (like a rubber ball) making a bounce noise, and then it would always land on it's side, usually facing to the side or back. It never landed straight up, that close to the stage, in the same direction it was facing while on the stage. The only way for it to have been upright facing that direction was if it had been gently placed there.

I did catch an *EVP right before I realized the duck was missing. This sound was not heard at the time.. and with how loud the sound is... I would think I would have.

Minus the personal experiences, these are a few other potential EVPs captured... Again, headphones are important.

*This one is cool but you need headphones. There is a little tiny voice and it sounds like she is saying "Lucy" the name of the little girl who haunts the theater.

*In this case - I said "I think Lucy would like gold and pink (glitter) wouldn't you?" after a few seconds of silence it sounds like a feminine voice saying "wouldn't you" almost repeating what I said.

*This file sounds like "Harvey" possibly saying, "Which is fine"

After leaving the theater - my mom and I headed back to our room in the straits lodge of Mission Point Resort. After the elevator doors closed, that's when I noticed, near the top of the elevator... we had a little tiny winged visitor.

Let me just tell you... a mother's job protecting her child must end when that child is an adult, cause as soon as my mom saw the bat and those doors opened, she shoved me out of the way, ran out the elevator, leaving me to fend for myself. LOL Poor lil' guy only yawned and stayed sleeping. He must have gotten stuck in there and exhausted himself trying to get out. So he just hung around from the vent at the top of the elevator until security caught him and wooshed him back outside where he belonged. (They love bats on the island. They take care of the bugs.)

So, thoughts, comments, questions? Let me know. Till next time.

MEL Meter

Equipment Spotlight Part 2: The Mel Meter

What is the Mel Meter? Well according to the "paranormal dictionary" (http://paranormaldictionary.com/wiki/Mel_Meter) :

The Mel Meter was designed and developed by Gary Galka of DAS Distribution Inc. Gary lost his oldest of three daughters, Melissa. After Melissa’s passing, some incredible things started to happen to Gary and his family. Melissa began to make her presence known through numerous ADC’s (after death communications) to Gary and his family. Gary designed the Mel Meter as a way to communicate with his daughter whom Gary says helped with the healing process.

The device is named after his daughter 'Mel' and the model number is her year of birth 87 and her year of passing 04 - "Mel-8704". For a long time there have been theories that spirits can manipulate the energy fields that surround us. These theories go on to say that energy is heat so when it’s transferred from one location to another it leaves behind a cold spot.

The Mel Meter takes what's good about the K-II and tweeks it... A LOT

The Mel Meter simultaneously registers EMF/Temperature/vibration with a back lighted screen to make it easier to see in the dark from a distance. It is also believed that spirits naturally emit an 'extremely low frequency' (ELF) EMF... The Mel is more capable of reading this ELF than a K-II. It is currently 20Hz lower than a K-II so it can specifically addresses the ELF issue.

What is nice about the temperature gauge, is it shows you changes in temperature as a spirit moves around. It is believed a spirit gathers energy from its surroundings to communicate or manifest, which is why you feel cold spots around you as spirits make themselves known. Thanks to the Mel Meter, you not only get the fluctuations in EMFs that could mean a spirit is nearby... it also gauges the change in temperature which can corroborate personal experiences and EMF changes.

One of my favorite features is the red navigational flashlight. When you are in the dark, it takes some time for your eyes to adjust. Once adjusted, a bright flashlight can blind you and cause you to need to take time to readjust your vision. The red light navigation light not only lights the way well enough for you to move around with ease, it does not affect your vision which has adjusted to the dark. That is a big plus.

The thing that is such a plus about the Mel Meter compared to other investigative pieces of equipment... is that the Mel Meter was SPECIFICALLY designed FOR paranormal investigation.

However, again... I call on everyone to remember the most important piece of equipment is your eyes and ears. If you stare at a meter allowing for it to change in front of your eyes, your eyes may miss that full body apparition or that ghostly shadow flying down the hall. Use it as a tool, but be attentive to your surroundings.

in recent months, even since I got my own Mel Meter... the price has become much more reasonable. Before you couldn't find it for under $130. I have recently started seeing some places selling them for $98. It is pricier than a K-II... but for someone who wants the paranormal to be more than just a hobby... if you really want to investigate, research and try to learn more about the paranormal, this is a great tool to have.

KII Meter

Equipment Spotlight Part 1 : K-II Meter

For amateur investigators, the most recognized and famous pieces of equipment thanks to shows like "Ghost Hunters" that first introduced it to the general public, is the K-II meter. The most affordable piece of equipment next to digital audio recorders, it is one of the most popular beginner investigation tools. Some claim that this is actually the first piece of equipment they purchase when starting an investigation kit. The K-II Meter is an Electromagnetic Field (or EMF) Meter.

Physic majors call EMFs, a field of force that consists of both electric and magnetic components, resulting from the motion of an electric charge and containing a definite amount of electromagnetic energy.  EMFs can be natural or man-made. They are everywhere, we just can't see them. That is where the meters come in. A K-II is one of those meters.

The problem most people run into with K-II meters is its sensitivity to EMFs, especially those with smartphones. Before using a K-II in an investigation, it is necessary to test the areas for any natural or man made spike in EMF; especially your own equipment. In most cases, while using a K-II you will need to turn off your cellphones and 2 way radios. I have noticed as long as there are no incoming texts or calls, my phone has no effect on the K-II. If there are incoming calls or texts, it stops causing hits on the K-II once I get a few feet away. It's best to turn the phones off however so there is no question.

The K-II meter has a few different uses in the paranormal field. First, the K-II (or any EMF meter) is used to test the area for high levels of EMF. Some investigators believe that extremely high EMF rates caused by things such as faulty wiring, can cause people to have false senses of the paranormal, including feelings of paranoia, and uneasiness. It is important that if high EMFs are found in man made appliances or wiring, that those issues are fixed. If the problem goes away, it could have been the issue with the “haunting”. If it doesn't, more investigations may be needed. However, many other paranormal investigators do not believe that any man-made EMF is high enough to cause physical and mental reactions on a person. That debate is still being studied.

Another reason we sweep with EMF meters is to test for random spikes. If you place an EMF meter down, is it constantly going off, or does it sit there for the most part, with only one green light on? This is important, as many use the EMF meter as a form of communication. If the spikes come randomly or constantly, it would mean a man made or natural EMF is causing the equipment to react and disrupts the ability to use the K-II for communication.

If no random spikes are found in an area, many investigators will place audio recorders in various areas, and begin an EVP session by explaining what the EMF meter is, and what it does. It is believed that if there is a spirit in the area, it can draw enough energy to create it's own EMF field, and by standing next to, or touching the meter, the entitiy can make the meter go off in response to questions. Many investigators have their own techniques to ensure the validity of the reactions. Some ask for 2 spikes for yes, one spike for no... some investigators use two meters, one is for when the answer is yes, and the other for no. While this is a highly debated use for EMF meters (especially the sensitive K-II meter) many swear by it.

To provide an example: on an investigation, one paranormal researcher I spoke to stated they asked a variety of questions with the 2 spikes for yes, one spike for no. First they sat and said nothing, and nothing happened on the meter. After several minutes they asked if there was anyone with them... make the meter light up twice if yes. The meter lit up twice to red, then stopped. They sat for a while again and asked again after a few minutes the same question. The meter lit up twice. They sat again. After a few minutes they asked if they were alone. The meter spiked once. (one spike for no).

Without waiting this time, they asked if the spirit present could make the meter light up and stay on; it did. When they asked it to stop, it turned off. After a few minutes of silence in which the meter did nothing, they began the EVP session. During the review phase, they found many unexplainable EVPs on their audio that coincided with EMF spikes. This showed them, the spikes were less than random.

I had the same experience. On one investigation I would clearly ask a question and preface it with, if the answer is yes, make the meter light up. The meter would light to red and would stay there until I stated, "please make the meter stop." and it would turn off. A few times I asked the same question, in a way the answer would be 'no'... and the meter would not light up at all. This was a less than random pattern.

The biggest problem with the K-II, you don't want to rely solely on the K-II for evidence. You want to look around and use your eyes and ears. You want to feel any changes in the air, feel the hairs standing on end, be completely aware of your body. You also want to pay attention to your other equipment which hopefully includes an audio recorder. You don't want to become SO reliant on your K-II that you're constantly staring at it and not looking around for yourself. When I was in the hallway of the First Ward School House, I saw with my own two eyes because I was looking around and not staring at my meters... a full body apparation.

So what are your thoughts? Have you used a K-II meter? Was it successful or not?

The Great Ouija Debate

I get asked a lot of questions when people find out I am a paranormal researcher/investigator. There is one question that ALWAYS comes up in the course of Q&As.. the Ouija board. There are many vehement defenders of using Ouija as a tool for investigations. Many claim it is no different than doing an EVP session. Is it?

Q – Isn't doing an EVP session with recorders like using a Ouija board?
A – this is a highly debated question. There are so many differences of opinions. Recently I actually had a pretty heated debate about the topic. There are many investigators who are more than willing to use a Ouija board as a way to communicate with spirits. They believe no matter what kind of investigation you choose to do, you don't know what you are going to encounter. You take a risk every time you walk into a site. One Ouija enthusiast stated to me that we don't know how a spirit communicates to us on an audio recorder. For all we know, they use us as a conduit much like they use us through a Ouija board. To a point they are right, but to a point I completely disagree. Since this topic is so hotly debated I can only speak on my own opinions, and this is only based on my opinions, not to disparage any person or group who chooses to use such devices. My motto has always been, do what works for you. However, since asked on many occasions, this is my personal opinion:

Recorder Vs. Ouija

  1. Permission – When performing a paranormal investigation, we place our recorders in various places and tell a spirit they are welcome to answer our questions, or speak to us and their voices may be captured on those devices for us to hear later. We give them permission to speak into the microphones of the recorders, we do not give them permission to touch us, manipulate us, or use our physical person in any way shape or form. With a Ouija board, you must physically hold onto the planchette (the triangle pointer) and give the spirit permission to use YOU as a conduit to make the planchette move to the appropriate answers. That is one big difference. We do not give permission to be used for EVP sessions, in a Ouija board session, you give express permission to any spirit to use your person as a form of communication. With a recorder, you can place it in a room, give a few instructions to a potential spirit, and then leave the room, or even the building, taking yourself completely out of the situation. You are are no longer there to be 'used' as a conduit, and you can still receive an EVP. I have gotten several excellent EVPs in a room with only a recorder. With a Ouija, you must be in the room in contact with the board at all times and grant permission to be used as a conduit between the spirit and the board so they can use you to push the planchette to give answers. The problem with granting that kind of permission, you do not know who or what you are inviting to use your person. Granted, as someone pointed out in the debate I had; there is no guarantee a spirit won't try to use you anyway in the course of an investigation. However, if you protect yourself coming in, leaving, and don't give that permission, you are lowering the risk. Using a Ouija and granting that permission without condition raises the risk 100 fold.
  2. Invitation – I liken EVP recorders vs. Ouija to this: Calling a friend and inviting them to join you for a chat (Ouija) vs you going to visit your friend at the place where they reside and chatting with them (EVP recorder). When you take your recorders to perform an EVP session, you are communicating with spirits that are allegedly haunting an area. As a paranormal investigator, we don't investigate places that are not known or believed to be haunted; what would be the point? I'm not going to go to a newly built McDonalds to perform a paranormal investigation when there has been zero claims of paranormal activity. That would be a waste of time. The Ouija's intended purpose was to communicate with spirits “from the other side”; to invite them to join you and communicate with you. Many people have gone to a spiritualist’s house to try to communicate with Grandma. Obviously Grandma isn't going to be haunting a complete stranger's house to whom she's never been to visit, so when they use the Ouija board to communicate with her, they are calling her to come from wherever she is, to join them in that place. It is not a good idea to invite spirits into a place they would not otherwise reside. You do not know who or what will come through. A strongly held belief by many is that demonic/evil/dark entities need an invitation in order to wreak havoc. the Ouija board gives them that invitation. Pretend to be a great great uncle long enough... get them to let their guard down... that's when they take over. There have been many documented cases of bad paranormal activity occurring after recreational Ouija use. Though I will concede 70+% of the time the users have little understanding of the Ouija and do not perform the proper closing of each session.
So in conclusion... Ouija boards – haunting is not a prerequisite to try to communicate with spirits. You can invite them to join you if they are not otherwise haunting an area. EVP recorders, a haunting is a prerequisite. You are not inviting them to join you, you are trying to communicate with spirits that are already there.

Again, this is a personal opinion. There are many investigative teams who will use a Ouija board in their investigations. As long as you close the session when you are finished, they said they have had no adverse effects. They believe it depends on your religious or spiritual beliefs. Before you decide to or not to use any piece of equipment, do your research and make the decision that is right for you. My decision is to not only NOT use a Ouija board, I will ask any group who uses one to withhold the start of a session till near the end of the investigation so that I can leave the building first. That is what works for me. Always figure out what works best for you. Do your homework before using ANY piece of equipment.

Email and Facebook is the quickest way to get a-hold of me as many times my phone is off if I am with a client, on an investigation, or busy with other appointments. I check my direct email frequently throughout the day, as with my Facebook.

If I am unavailable at the time you need my services, with your permission I will pass your case on to a reputable group in your area who may be able to help. If you feel more comfortable with my services, I can work side by side with the team whether on location if I can make it, or remotely via the internet (Email, Skype, etc).

All emails/calls are held in confidentiality and handled with complete professionalism.

Please do note: I do NOT tell you what you want to hear: I approach all cases with complete honesty. If you feel you have a photo of a spirit, and you want to make sure you find someone who will tell you that is is definitely the best evidence of a haunting ever, even if it may not be... you will want to look elsewhere.

Telling people what will make them happy does not help further paranormal investigations or properly educate the community about this legitimate field of research... nor will it actually help you, the client. And you are the most important reason why I do this.

INVESTIGATIONS/CONSULTATIONS WHETHER BY PHONE OR EMAIL: ALWAYS FREE!! THERE ARE NO CHARGES FOR SERVICES AT ANY TIME!

While I can occasionally travel to other states... time does not always allow, but I am ALWAYS available to answer questions via the methods mentioned above no matter where you're located - and I can direct you to reputable groups in your area if I am unable to help.

If you have questions on a photo/evp or are looking for opinions on a potential paranormal situation, I can help the best I can via email, however - please note: With anything, I can not give you a definite answer one way or the other without researching the claims for myself (other than a case of outright fakes such as iPhone ghost app photos).

Paranormal Certification

Paranormal Investigator Certification??

I was recently asked about obtaining a degree to become a paranormal investigator and what I thought about it.

Honestly...I had never heard of these courses until recently to be honest. So I did a little research.
These courses range anywhere from $45.00 to $500.00 for certification. Let me say... there are no... (I repeat) THERE ARE NO certifications for paranormal investigators. It's like throwing money away in my opinion. Here are the reasons why. Feel free to disagree with me if you like. But I was asked MY thoughts.

1. The word Paranormal means - beyond our scientific understanding, defies scientific definitions/can not be defined in scientific means. That is to say... with the paranormal, these are things OUTSIDE of the normal.

Let me give you a "for Example": Science can come up with proof of certain medicines working for certain disorders/diseases/injuries... for example: If you have bacterial pneumonia... most doctors KNOW a certain anti-biotic will help fight the infection. They will also include a steroid inhaler to help open the airway in the lungs to make it easier to breathe. Unless you're part of a free clinical trial, a doctor is not about to test an unproven medicine on you when you are ill. I have never been told yet, "hmm... you have double pneumonia. It's pretty bad. Let me give you an experimental drug that has never been tested and is not scientifically proven to take care of the issue you're having."

However... that's what we do with the paranormal. If someone had the answers to what the paranormal is, how it occurs, how it's treated, and had tried and scientifically proven methods that work on each case, every time without fail... they'd be millionaires, the paranormal would be a science and reputable colleges would have actual courses on ghost hunting and 'ghost busting'. However that is not the case. We are still learning about the field. there are so many nooks and crannies we still haven't explored in the paranormal field, we're not even CLOSE to making the paranormal a scientific normal. So we don't go to someone's house with paranormal issues and say, "we can without a shadow of a doubt say you have A.B. and C. happening to you and you can do X.Y. and Z. to take care of the issue.

When we go into a home, we say, "after research and investigating, we BELIEVE you have A.B. and C. happening." and unless you are TRAINED (years of training from all different sources) in cleansings, blessings or exorcisms... you can offer them places they can turn for such things. You will say, "You can try asking the spirit to leave, and if that doesn't work, have a priest come to the house and do a cleansing of spirits and blessing in the name of God. Most entities will leave at that point. If you have issues even after that, we'll be happy to come back and see what else we can find on another investigation."

it's not like if a doctor says, "you have cancer... let us try radiation/chemotherapy".

There is scientific studies that prove those treatments for certain cancers are successful. Are they 100% successful? No. However there is science to back up the use of such a treatment plan. Is a blessing of a home 100% successful? No. and there is no science to back up the use of such a plan of action. It is mostly faith based.

See where I'm going with this?

2. Because the paranormal can not be scientifically measured... we are still learning ourselves as to what Ghosts are, about the types of hauntings, what causes a haunting, and how to handle each case of a haunting. We are learning more by what we call - trial and error. We take new technology and try it out in the field to see what works and what doesn't. If it works, it stays. If it doesn't, it's tossed. That's called common sense. If you need to pay $500 to be certified in common sense... this field may not be the right one for you.

3. More than likely you will not see back what you pay into the programs. 90+% of reputable paranormal groups do not charge for their services. They accept donations/tips from those they help if offered, but they don't usually go in with the direct idea to charge a person they're trying to help. The reason this is, is because those we are trying to help, we're not only there to help... but we're there to use them as part of our case studies to further the paranormal research field. So they're helping us as much as we're helping them.

With all the groups that are not charging... a client will usually pass over the ones charging fees unless they have been proven as reputable in the field... and it takes a lot of time to build reputation. Also... most places investigators really want to get into charge the investigators to visit. For example: You don't just walk into the historic mounds theater in MN, there is a fee they charge that they put towards the upkeep of the historic site. Some places charge ridiculous fees just because they're greedy, but that's another story.

So basically, you're paying for certification you will use to either help people for free, or pay others to be allowed to investigate.

4. While science has hotly debated theories... there are still many places where they have common beliefs and agreements. The paranormal field has more hotly debated theories than they do common ground.

There are many different theories on why ghosts are here, what they really are, how many types of hauntings there are, how they occur and what to do about them.

Many groups believe in the use of Ouija, many groups refuse to touch it. There are those who can't stand the K-II, there are those who swear by it, and those who use it as a tool, but hold no opinion unless they can say there is a correlation between something else that happened at the same time the lights lit up. There are groups who believe the Spirit Box is a pile of bunk, while others believe it's the bees knees. There are those who don't believe in Orbs... while there are those you just can't break of the belief that it's not more than dust/fibers/bugs/moisture in the air.

There are those who are atheist and do not believe in spiritual reasons for ghosts, nor the idea of demons in the biblical sense and believe clergy are not necessary to rid spirits from a home. There are religious who believe in demons, angels, blessings, and cleansings by clergy. There are some extreme religious groups who believe all hauntings are demonic. Some believe in provoking, some stay way from that.

So, in the paranormal field there is a lot of trial... a lot of error... a lot of best guesses based on evidence we have in front of us... a lot of common sense (do your research on the area, don't use what doesn't work, use what does, don't make promises you can't fulfill, don't get in over your head)... there's a lot of debate... There is nothing really tangible which you can be certified for. My way of investigating is a complete 180 from someone else's way of investigating. My beliefs don't jive with a lot of the beliefs of other investigators. So how can I certify someone for something that they can never truly be prepared for without a little trial and error themselves.

Talk to local investigative groups. I, myself, offer free apprenticeships. I let you shadow me on investigations. I have email discussions about theories, uses of equipment, etc. I take them on the field when they're ready and show them the ropes step by step, eventually - if I feel they are ready - I will have them lead the investigations and tell ME what to do to see if they got it... and then if I feel they are ready, let them go to either start a group, do more research, or join a group. Sometimes I even recommend shadowing multiple groups. As I said, there are so many different theories and practices... it's always a good idea to learn from many people. See what matches with what you already learned, see what differs, see how you can combine the two practices to make it work best for you and those you're trying to help.

So long story short (too late)... there is no certification for the paranormal unless you're looking into things like Reiki, or becoming clergy (priests do have to go through schooling... some even study exorcisms). things like that. As for being a ghost hunter. No. Not really. It's a waste of money... at least at this point.

The only prerequisite to becoming a true paranormal investigator at this time is a passion for the paranormal, a desire to learn and move the research forward and help those who are plagued by paranormal issues. That is the most important thing about being a paranormal investigator. Passion, compassion, and objectivity. You can't get that through a $200 certification course.

Now this is for the newer “paranormal investigator certification”. It should not be confused the the a field of study known as Parapsychology. There is an actual college course that offers a degree in Parapsychology which is defined as: the study of mental phenomena that are excluded from or inexplicable by orthodox scientific psychology (such as hypnosis, telepathy, etc.). It mostly focuses on the study of unusual events associated with human experiences. This includes telepathy, clairvoyance, extrasensory perception, psychokinesis, near-death experiences, and reincarnation. They have also been focusing on some paranormal studies like spiritual hauntings. Parapsychology is basically the application of scientific methods to the study of the phenomenon mentioned above.

Some colleges do not offer degrees in parapsychology, but it is out there. However it is to be noted, many say the field is highly underfunded, and largely ignored by the traditional science field. One college did state: “Opportunities for making a full-time career in parapsychology are very rare, since there are presently many more qualified people wishing to work in the field than there are funds for their support.” Some do like to study parapsychology to learn the scientific method, and learn more about the other studies such as psychic studies as well as near death and out of body experiences. Most full courses cost $1000 and up.

However, any investigator will tell you, you do not need a degree to become a paranormal investigator. What you need mainly is an interest in the field, a proper level of belief and skepticism, good people skills so you can relate to clients, and a willingness to learn and the ability to quickly pick up on how to use new technology.

Many investigators, such as myself, who got into the field due to personal experiences have apprenticed with multiple investigative groups to learn all styles, theories and beliefs. They attend paranormal conventions and sit in to listen to investigators who have been in the field for a long time and what they have to say on the topic. They ask questions, and seek answers from all sorts of sources and then put them into practice.
The biggest thing you need to be an investigator is integrity, and a true desire to learn more about the mysteries of our world. Of course, there are those who will feel differently, but these are my opinions based on my experiences.
